On April 23, 2020, Togo forward Emmanuel Adebayor sparked controversy when he told his fans that he would not contribute to the COVID-19 pandemic in his homeland.

During an interview with his fans on Facebook Live, Adebayor stated that he was not responsible for bringing the coronavirus to Togo.

He also expressed frustration over being compared to other African football greats, including Samuel Eto'o and Didier Drogba, who have been actively involved in COVID-19 relief efforts.

“I always do things according to the wishes of my heart and not according to the words of others,” Adebayor explained.

He went on to say, “I am Sheyi Adebayor, I am neither of these and will never be. I will not contribute. Thank you and good day.”
