A family at Ichuga Estate in Nanyuki town is facing a desperate situation after their landlord tore off the roof of their one-roomed house, leaving them exposed to the elements.
According to Jane Wamucii, a 39-year-old mother of three, the landlord removed the door and some iron sheets on Wednesday without granting her an eviction notice as required.
Ms. Wamucii, who has lived in the house for close to two years, expressed her shock and fear for her children's health, saying, “It is raining heavily and I fear that my children could contract diseases. Well, I have been trying to reach out to him but in vain.”
The landlord and other individuals also stormed the house and took away her foodstuff and other household items, leaving the family to sleep on the floor and endure the cold.
Ms. Wamucii owns a bar that she closed due to the coronavirus pandemic regulations, and she has been unable to cater for her family as a result.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged landlords to reduce monthly rent for their tenants following the financial crisis caused by the Covid-19 disease.
