On April 23, 2020, Twiga Foods and Jumia announced a distribution deal to deliver fresh and processed food to consumers in Nairobi.
As the government restricts movement to curb the spread of COVID-19, Jumia's partnership with Twiga aims to provide customers with same-day free delivery on the platform in Nairobi, saving them money by cutting out middlemen.
"Our partnership with Twiga will allow customers to shop on Jumia for their fruits and vegetables, and they will also get same-day free delivery on the platform in Nairobi," said Jumia Kenya's Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Sam Chappatte.
With Jumia operating in Kenya since 2013, the company has built an extensive e-commerce and logistics platform with a country-wide distribution network.
Twiga Foods, on the other hand, has been building Kenya's only end-to-end distribution for fresh and processed food over the last six years, sourcing from over 15,000 producers and delivering to over 5,000 retailers daily.
Through this partnership, the two companies aim to offer delivery services for food, providing fresh, quality products directly to people's homes across Nairobi.
"This partnership with Jumia is a great milestone for us," said Peter Njonjo, Twiga Foods Chief Executive Officer. "It allows us to scale up in terms of products, retailers, and cities served through this platform, as we continue executing our mission to feed and supply Africa's urban population with traceable, quality, and affordable products."
Twiga's Fresh bundle offers a 50% discount to the prevailing market prices, with the consumer offerings consisting of bundled fresh fruit and vegetables and non-perishable consumer foods.
The service will be available on the Jumia and Jumia Food apps under the "Supermarket" category, with the "Freshi bundle" offering 28kg of fruit and veg for Ksh1925, including free delivery in Nairobi, a price about 50% cheaper than in supermarkets.
