As the coronavirus lockdown continues, many of us are finding ourselves with a stash of food that's past its expiration date. But before you toss it, consider this: the dates on food labels are more about quality than safety.
While it's true that some foods are best consumed before their expiration date, others can be safely eaten even after they've passed their prime. Here are some examples:
1. Hard Cheese ¶
Unopened hard cheese can last for up to six months, while opened cheese can last for a month. Just be sure to cut off any moldy parts before serving.
2. Frozen Foods ¶
Frozen meats and vegetables can be safely eaten after their expiration date, provided they're kept frozen. Divide them into meal-sized portions to prevent thawing and refreezing, which can lead to food poisoning.
3. Eggs ¶
Whole eggs can be safely stored for three to five weeks after purchase. To check if an egg is still good, try the buoyancy test: place it in a bowl of water. If it sinks, it's still safe to eat; if it floats, it's time to toss it.
4. Milk ¶
Store milk in the coldest part of your fridge to keep it safe to drink for longer. The exact shelf life will depend on the storage conditions, but with proper care, milk can last for several weeks past its expiration date.
5. Canned Foods ¶
Unless the can is rusty or bulging, canned foods can be safely eaten years after their expiration date. However, their flavor may not be the same, so be prepared for a change in taste.
6. Bread ¶
With proper storage, bread can be safely eaten past its expiration date. Just be sure to check for mold and discard any bread that's gone bad.
7. Pasta ¶
Dry pasta can last for up to two years after its expiration date if stored in a cool, dry place. Check for odors or mold before consuming.
8. Cereal ¶
Cereal can last for up to six months past its expiration date if stored in airtight containers. While it may go stale, it's still safe to eat if you don't mind the altered taste.
Remember to always use your discretion when consuming food past its expiration date. Look out for signs of spoilage, such as bad odors, changes in appearance or consistency, and mold.
