On April 22, 2020, the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) announced plans to purchase rice and beans as part of a food security drive.
According to NCPB, the agency will appoint agents to buy 15,000 bags of rice and beans, with the first purchase expected to take place at the end of April.
The agency is seeking experienced firms with a history in the business to supply and deliver the commodities under agency agreements.
Applicants will be required to demonstrate their experience in selling and distributing beans and rice to clients, including stockists, organizations, and farmers.
NCPB plans to purchase 4,000 bags of Rosecoco beans, 4,000 bags of Mwitemania beans, 2,000 bags of Red Haricot beans, and 5,000 units of milled sindano rice packed in 50-kilogramme bags.
The development comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the allocation of Sh660 million for the purchase of locally grown rice by the Kenya National Trading Company for sale to government institutions.
The move is expected to boost demand for rice and beans, leading to better prices for farmers and suppliers.
