On April 22, 2020, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko made a shocking revelation on Facebook, asking residents to forgive him for transferring some of his powers to the national government.

According to Sonko, he was coerced into signing a document that he didn't fully comprehend, with the promise that it would improve service delivery for Nairobi residents.

However, things took a turn for the worse, and Sonko is now seeking to terminate the deal, which he claims was orchestrated by cartels who wanted to supply public sanitation booths at an exaggerated cost.

As reported by Bravin Yuri on Twitter, Sonko has begun the process of terminating the transfer of key Nairobi functions to the national government, citing frustrations from cartels.

With the governor's powers now in limbo, Sonko is pinning his hopes on the courts to help him regain control of the city's affairs.

It's a battle that promises to be intense, with President Uhuru Kenyatta having previously intervened to slow down the impeachment plans against Sonko.
