On April 22, 2020, Kenya was set to receive an additional Sh513 million from Denmark to support its fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Ambassador Mette Knudsen, this contribution would benefit Kenya's health system, particularly in coronavirus hotspots.

Denmark had earlier given Sh320 million for the same purpose through the World Bank on April 4, 2020.

Of the new Sh513 million, Sh359 million would be allocated to support county health systems, while Sh156 million would go towards water and sanitation interventions in potential Covid-19 hotspots.

"The pandemic is a global challenge that calls for global solidarity," Ambassador Knudsen said. "Even if the pandemic rages in Denmark, we have decided to provide another contribution of Sh513 million to the people of Kenya during these challenging times."

"It is our ambition that the funding will benefit the poor and vulnerable populations the most," she added.

Denmark's Parliament had approved a global Covid-19 emergency support package of DKK 650 million (Sh10 billion) the previous week, with Sh513 million set aside for Kenya.

Ambassador Knudsen noted that the new funding would be implemented through existing bilateral cooperation mechanisms.
