On April 22, 2020, the body of Professor Ken Waliaula Walibora, a celebrated author and veteran journalist, was airlifted from Nairobi and laid to rest at his Makutano homestead in Cherang’any constituency.
Due to government guidelines curbing the spread of coronavirus, only 15 mourners attended the 47-minute funeral service, which was presided over by Pastor Ken Ngurase Lujiri of Jehovah Witness Church.
Those who attended included Prof Walibora's extended family members, neighbors, and scholars. His wife, Ann Chebet, and their two children, Sheila Zawadi and Katila Samba, were unable to attend as they were in the USA.
Family spokesperson Patrick Lumumba thanked those who stood with them during the challenging times and called on investigating agencies to get to the bottom of the cause of Prof Walibora's death.
Prof Walibora was remembered by his colleagues and friends as a disciplined and committed Christian who valued both the elderly and the young ones. He was also praised for his exemplary creative writing skills and excellent journalistic skills.
St. Peter's Mumias High school principal, Cosmas Nabungolo, described Prof Walibora as an educationist and a sportsman who added value among students in schools by promoting the growth of Swahili language.
Mr. Nabungolo said the teaching fraternity will remember Prof Walibora for his mentorship, which saw an upgrade in Kiswahili standards.
