Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) had announced in February that sections of the Thika Superhighway would be closed until mid-April 2020 to facilitate the construction of footbridges.
However, as of April 13, 2020, the roadwork was still ongoing, leaving motorists with only a single inner lane and diverting some traffic to motorcycle and bicycle lanes.
The busy section of the highway is a crucial link to Mathare slums, the National Youth Service engineering school, the Kenya School of Monetary Studies, and De La Rue money printing premises.
Fourway Construction Limited has been contracted to construct the Survey of Kenya and Garden City footbridges at a cost of Sh390 million, while Interways Works Limited is responsible for installing the Witeithie and Mang'u footbridges at a cost of Sh430 million.
The construction of the bridges started in May 2018 and is part of a larger project to install 18 footbridges along the Thika Superhighway, with 10 more planned but yet to be erected due to lack of funds.
