On April 22, 2020, Kenya's government took a significant step to contain the spread of COVID-19 by placing Mandera County under a containment order.

The decision was made by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i following a surge in community infections in the north-eastern county.

Mandera joins Nairobi, Mombasa, Kwale, and Kilifi as counties under containment to prevent the spread of the virus, as recommended by the Ministry of Health.
