Copyright Dispute Rocks Kenyan Music Scene ¶
Kenyan RnB sensation Otile Brown has found himself at the center of a copyright dispute over his new track 'Vibaya', which has been accused of using beats created by producer Makoy without his consent.
According to Makoy, Otile Brown and his producer Vickypondis sampled his beats without even paying him a dime, sparking a heated exchange on social media.
Makoy took to his Instagram page to express his shock and disappointment, stating that Otile Brown had sampled two of his beats, including the one used in 'Vibaya', without his permission.
"I'm shocked this guy @otilebrown samples my beats, 2 of them. Now the latest jam #vibaya one of the two beats he produced using this guy Myambo @vickypondis."
Makoy also accused Vickypondis of being complicit in the alleged theft, stating that they had become enemies.
"@vickypondis_producer bana 👉 I hate you ujue ivo, io vibe it took me 10 minutes kucreate beat ni yangu tag ni yako."
As a result of the dispute, Makoy has deleted the video of 'Vibaya' from YouTube, stating that it will only be reinstated once he is paid for his work.
"Vibaya song by @otilebrown is no more on YouTube. Nimeitoa mimi mwenyewe nitairudisha if only my beat is payed for. Afike bei."
The incident has sparked a heated debate in the Kenyan music scene, with many calling for greater accountability and respect for intellectual property rights.
