On April 1, a ship carrying 75 million litres of super petrol, imported by Asharami Synergy Ltd, was turned away from the Mombasa port after its fuel was rejected by the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC).
The decision was made after tests revealed that the quality of the fuel did not match the paperwork presented by the firm. According to a source at KPC, the fuel's final boiling point was 204 degrees Celsius, exceeding the required 200 degrees Celsius set by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs).
Asharami Synergy Ltd has denied the allegations, stating that its cargo met the required standards and demanding a retest by an independent ISO-certified agency.
“Such a test will provide an outcome that will be acceptable to all,” Asharami says.
The company also claimed that the tests upon which the decision was made were carried out by agencies without international calibration, and that the facilities did not have the required certification to perform the stated test for gasoline.
