On April 22, 2020, a Kenyan truck driver who arrived at the Malaba border post in Uganda tested positive for Covid-19, marking the fourth confirmed case in the country.
The driver, who was among 651 samples tested for the virus, did not exhibit any symptoms consistent with Covid-19, according to the Uganda Ministry of Health.
"The confirmed case is a 32-year-old Kenyan truck driver who arrived at Malaba border post from Kenya. He did not have any signs and symptoms consistent with Covid-19," said the Director-General of Health Services.
As part of standard procedure, the truck driver was tested as part of the screening process for all cargo transporters in Uganda.
Uganda has heightened surveillance on its borders, targeting truck drivers entering the region, in an effort to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus.
Senior government officials, including Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, had visited the Malaba border point earlier in the week to inspect the level of preparedness at the busy border point that connects Kenya and Uganda.
