Published on April 22, 2020, Nairobi News revealed the top 5 most followed Kenyan politicians on Twitter.

Deputy President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga are the most popular politicians on Twitter, with over 2.9 million and 2.5 million followers respectively.

William Ruto, the second most powerful politician in the country, has built his Twitter following by interacting with Kenyans on his day-to-day activities and using the platform to attack his political enemies.

Raila Odinga, who has served in active politics for three decades, has successfully transferred his popularity 'on the ground' to Twitter, despite struggling to translate his abrasive style on social media.

Mike Sonko, the embattled Nairobi governor, ranks third with over 1 million followers, thanks to his consistent use of Twitter to dish out goodies, interact with followers in simple Swahili and Sheng, and post exciting or controversial videos.

Kipchumba Murkomen, the Senate's Majority leader, rounds out the top 5 with over 1 million followers, after transforming himself into a critic of the government and using Twitter to invite followers into his living room and farm.

Hassan Joho, the charismatic Mombasa governor, completes the list with over 896,000 followers, who are drawn to his class, opulence, and refined taste of fashion and the finer things in life.
