On April 20, 2020, Governor Amason Kingi of Kilifi County launched a food distribution programme aimed at supporting vulnerable households affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The programme, which targets approximately 50,000 households, involves the distribution of foodstuffs through modern technology for easy monitoring and tracking of deliveries.

Speaking at the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depot in Kilifi Town, Governor Kingi emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the distribution process, warning those entrusted with the task against diverting the food.

“Each vehicle carrying the food will be monitored at a central place, and a short message will be delivered to both the recipient and the county government to confirm delivery,” he explained.

The food items being distributed include maize meal, beans, salt, and soap, donated by various organizations. Governor Kingi acknowledged that the amount of food being distributed may not be sufficient, but emphasized that the county government is doing its best with the resources available.

However, the governor noted that elderly persons, orphans, and persons with disabilities receiving stipends through the National Government’s InuaJamii initiative would not be included in the county government programme.

He urged residents who can afford to feed themselves not to scramble for the donated food, emphasizing the need for people to adhere to government directives and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
