Kenyan professor and writer Ken Walibora was involved in a dispute with a publisher just days before his death, according to police investigating the incident.
On April 22, 2020, Walibora was struck and killed by a matatu on Landhies Road in Nairobi, more than three kilometers from where he had parked his car on Kijabe Street.
Police have been analyzing mobile phone records and CCTV footage in an effort to piece together the events leading up to the accident.
One theory being pursued is that Walibora was being chased by a group of men when he was hit by the minibus, and that he may have sustained a cut on his hand while trying to defend himself.
"The wounds suggested that Prof Walibora may have been trying to defend himself," said Dr. Johansen Oduor, a forensic expert.
Preparations are underway for Walibora's burial, which will be limited to 15 mourners due to coronavirus restrictions.
"There will be no crowd. Even the number of journalists will be restricted," said Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Samson Ojwang.
Kenya's publishing community has paid tribute to Walibora, who was a prolific writer and director of the Global and Language Studies Centre at Riara University.
