On April 21, 2020, Kenya was dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, with a total of 296 positive cases and 69 recoveries.

At the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Nairobi, 50 people allegedly escaped from quarantine, sparking a police manhunt.

According to reports, the individuals were having their evening meal when it started raining, and security officers took cover. The escapees allegedly took advantage of the situation and jumped out through the fence.

Health Ministry officials had been monitoring the individuals to see if they would develop symptoms of the pandemic. Some were waiting for COVID-19 test results.

Health Chief Administrative Officer Mercy Mwangangi confirmed that the Ministry had received reports of the escape and stated that the Ministry of Interior was following up on the issue.

Meanwhile, 92 other people were arrested for violating social distancing rules and will be forced into quarantine units. They also risk being charged with breaching the new obligation to maintain a physical distance of one meter or more from the next individual in public areas.
