On April 21, 2020, Burundi confirmed five new coronavirus cases, bringing the country's total number of infections to 11, according to the health ministry.

Health Minister Thadée Ndikumana stated that the new patients were contacts of previously confirmed positive cases.

"Out of the 204 people who were tested for the virus, five results turned up positive," said Mr. Ndikumana.

Four patients were discharged after two consecutive negative results, the minister announced.

Just last week, Burundi reported its first fatality after a patient who tested positive for the virus died in Bujumbura.

Despite the rising cases, the government has encouraged citizens to practice good hygiene, maintain social distance, and report any suspected cases through a hotline. However, public gatherings, including weddings, meetings, and prayers in churches and mosques, continue to take place.
