As the world grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, Kenya is facing a worrying trend of citizens disregarding prevention measures. According to the Ministry of Health, a significant number of Kenyans still do not believe that the virus is present in the country, while others are living a carefree life despite a sustained campaign by the government.
On April 21, 2020, Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Dr. Mercy Mwangangi expressed concern over the non-compliance with guidelines announced to decimate and eventually prevent the spread of COVID-19. She emphasized the importance of observing measures put in place to contain the virus.
Dr. Mwangangi noted that nine out of 15 cases of COVID-19 were picked up in communities by surveillance teams. She urged Kenyans to adhere to restrictions and obey the rules, warning that flouting the rules puts one's own life at risk, as well as that of family and colleagues.
The Ministry of Health is engaging security personnel to roll out guidelines for them and provide capacity building to ensure that they are all masked while conducting surveillance activities. Dr. Mwangangi also highlighted the challenges faced in regards to sample kits and separation of swabs, which has resulted in a reduction in sample testing. However, the ministry has engaged its supply chain to avail the samples and up their testing capacity.
