As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread in Kenya, Chief Justice David Maraga has announced that open court sessions will remain suspended until further notice.
Speaking at a news conference on April 21, 2020, Maraga cited the risk of accelerating the spread of the virus as the reason for the decision.
He noted that court sessions attract people from all walks of life and involve the exchange of papers, which increases the risk of transmission.
Maraga assured that courts will continue to prioritize cases related to defilement and domestic violence, which have seen an increase since the pandemic began.
He also revealed that the Judiciary has received technology from Microsoft to aid in remote operations for the next six months.
Maraga will continue to consult with the Ministry of Health and review the decision when necessary.
