NAIROBI, Kenya, April 21, 2020 - The government has taken steps to address a surge in unproductivity among its employees, who have been working from home since President Uhuru Kenyatta issued a directive in late March.
Labour Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui stated that the ministry is working with social partners to establish guidelines and tools for employees to use while working from home.
Chelugui also disclosed that approximately 300,000 employees in the Tourism sector may be placed on unpaid leave for May and June if the coronavirus pandemic does not improve.
He emphasized that this decision was made after a meeting with stakeholders, who agreed to adopt a similar measure to avoid mass layoffs and job losses.
Chelugui's proposal aligns with the Pandemic Response Management Bill 2022, which has been sponsored by Senator Johnson Sakaja.
During a virtual meeting with the Senate's seven-member Ad Hoc committee on coronavirus, Chelugui was accompanied by Labour Principal Secretary Peter Tum.
