On April 21, 2020, a viral social media post alleged that face masks being recycled and sold by hawkers in Kenya came from Mbagathi Hospital. The hospital's management has since denied these claims.
The hospital's board chair, Dr. George Osewe, stated that all used masks are incinerated in the hospital's incinerator, dismissing the claims as baseless.
Dr. Osewe emphasized the hospital's commitment to patient and public safety, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. He assured that the hospital takes preventative measures seriously and would not engage in actions that put public lives at risk.
Investigations into the allegations have been launched, and the Ministry of Health has advised people to properly dispose of used masks by tearing or burning them to prevent re-use.
