On the night of April 20, 2020, a heavy downpour pounded Kunyak, Chilchila, and Kamasian ward in Kipkelion West constituency, Kericho County, causing massive mudslides that would claim three lives.

Two minors, aged 12 and 15, lost their lives when a landslide swept off their home at Kamasian ward. Their bodies were taken to the Kericho county hospital mortuary.

Red Cross officials were dispatched to affected areas, including Kapkese, Kamiwa, Rwandet, Timbilil, and Kipteden village, to assess the damage.

Hezron Kipngeno, the Chichila ward representative and leader of the majority at the county assembly, expressed concern over the fate of a handful of people and domestic animals yet to be accounted for.

"This is the worst landslides to affect the area in recent years," Kipngeno said.

The meteorological department had warned of heavy rainfall in the coming days, listing Kericho as one of the counties set to receive excessive amounts of rainfall.
