On April 21, 2020, Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong'o's wife, Dorothy, was instrumental in the appointment of former Moi University professor Boaz Otieno as the new county executive committee member for health.
Before his appointment, Otieno had confided in friends that Dorothy Nyong'o had approved his appointment, highlighting her significant influence in the county's administrative decisions.
Boaz Otieno, a former associate professor at Moi University's School of Health Sciences, was serving as the director for Programmes at the Western Kenya US Centre for Disease Control.
The appointment has sparked controversy among the MCAs who are set to approve it in the county assembly, with some expressing concerns about the process.
Dr. Otieno will take over the docket previously held by Governor Nyong'o, following the transfer of Miguda Attyang to the cooperatives docket. Attyang has been at odds with Dorothy, who is often referred to as the 'queen behind the throne'.
The workers in the health docket, who had downed tools twice last year, are dissatisfied with the operations in the department, citing delayed promotions and salaries.
