Covid-19: Tanzania's Cases Soar to 254

On April 20, 2020, Tanzania's health ministry confirmed 84 new cases of the coronavirus, bringing the total number of infections to 254.

According to Health Minister Ummy Mwalimu, the new cases were reported across the country, with the commercial hub Dar es Salaam recording the highest number of infections at 33.

Ms Mwalimu also reported that Arusha had four cases, while Mbeya, Kilimanjaro, Pwani, Mwanza, and the capital Dodoma had three cases each. Manyara, Ruvuma, Morogoro, and Rukwa had two cases each, and Tabora, Lindi, Mara, Mtwara, and Kagera had single cases.

The semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar reported 16 new coronavirus infections, bringing the total number of cases in the island to 16.

Ms Mwalimu also announced that the number of deaths had risen to 10, with three people succumbing in Dar es Salaam and two in Zanzibar.

Those who have recovered from the virus stand at 11, since the country reported its first case on March 16.

Ms Mwalimu urged citizens to continue following laid-down precautions to prevent further infections, including washing hands with water and soap, observing social distancing, and avoiding crowded places.
