On April 21, 2020, a disturbing incident of police brutality shook the Machakos community. Police Constable Nesters Mwambai, attached to the Kikesa Patrol Base in Yatta subcounty, was arrested by his colleagues for allegedly raping a 45-year-old woman who had been summoned to the station in relation to a goat theft.

According to sources, the victim was dragged to the constable's quarters, where she was repeatedly raped before being rescued by other police officers. The incident was confirmed by Machakos County Police Commander Karanja Muiruri, who condemned the act and urged the public to view it as an isolated incident rather than a reflection of the entire police service.

Medical examinations conducted on the victim confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted. The suspect, who has been remanded at the Matuu Police Station, is also facing disciplinary action, including possible dismissal from the force.

As investigations continue, led by Masake Wanga, the Machakos community is left to grapple with the severity of the incident and the need for greater accountability within the police service.
