On Monday, a shocking case of fraud came to light in Nairobi, where a middle-aged man was accused of conning a Pakistani national of Sh14 million in a fake gold deal.
According to the charges, Dute Moses Mwanje obtained $114,000 from Asif Mohamed by falsely pretending to be in a position to sell him genuine gold. The offence is alleged to have been committed jointly with others at large.
The case was reported at Kileleshwa and Makongeni police stations before being taken up by officers from the Makadara Directorate of Criminal Investigations offices.
Additionally, Mwanje is facing charges of possession of fake currency, after he was allegedly found with fake $200,000 at Kobil petrol station near Belle Vue on Mombasa Road.
He was planning to dupe Mohammed that he was refunding Mohammed of his cash when detectives laid an ambush and arrested him.
When presented before senior principal magistrate Angelo Kithinji of Makadara law courts, Mwanje denied the charges.
He was released on a Sh 2 million bond, with the case set to be heard from July 28.
