As the world grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, Kenya is demanding compensation from China for the devastating economic impact of the virus. In a letter sent to China, Germany has already demanded $162 billion in compensation for the destruction caused by the virus.
The COVID-19 pandemic, which originated in Wuhan, China, has infected over 2 million people globally, with Kenya recording 254 cases and 14 deaths.
Kenya's economy has been severely affected, with the tourism industry taking a significant hit. The country is currently in a partial lockdown, with movements restricted outside designated areas and a curfew in place.
Narok County Senator, Ledama Olekina, has called for the Chinese government to be held responsible for the economic losses incurred by Kenya. He estimates that the country has lost over $1.2 billion in tourism revenue and $2 billion in diaspora remittances.
Senator Olekina has urged the government to send a bill of $100 billion to China to compensate for the losses incurred by Kenya. He also expressed his support for US President Donald Trump's call for China to be held accountable for the pandemic.
