On April 20, 2020, Tanzania's Health Minister, Ms Ummy Mwalimu, announced that the country had recorded 84 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 254.

Of the new cases, 16 were reported in Zanzibar, while the rest were from the mainland. The cases were identified after samples were taken between April 18 and 20.

The new cases were distributed across various provinces, with Dar es Salaam reporting the highest number at 33, followed by Arusha with 4 cases.

Notably, one Member of Parliament has also tested positive for the novel coronavirus after traveling to Dar es Salaam.

Ms Mwalimu assured that all patients from the mainland were admitted and were doing well, except for four who required specialized care.

Despite the surge in cases, Tanzania has not implemented measures such as banning public gatherings or closing its borders, as recommended by the World Health Organization.
