On April 21, 2020, Ruth Matete's lawyer, Robert Odanga, shared details about the last conversation she had with her late husband, Beloved John Apewajoye, before his death.

According to Odanga, Beloved John Apewajoye requested his wife to keep his gas explosion accident secret from his family.

He told Sunday Nation:

‘He requested her not to tell his family what happened because he did not want them to get worried. In his first week in hospital, he video called his brother to assure the family that he was on the road to recovery. That was before his wounds became septic and his kidneys started failing,’

Ruth Matete informed her husband's family that he was being treated for appendicitis, not the gas explosion accident.

Initially, the family was upset about being misinformed, but they later understood the situation, according to Odanga.

Athi River DCI chief Vincent Korir stated that no charges will be preferred against Ruth Matete for now, pending the post mortem results.
