On April 20, 2020, Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and other county leaders showcased the county's initiative to support vulnerable families impacted by coronavirus restrictions. The county government has turned to technology to distribute foodstuffs and other donations, sending e-vouchers to beneficiaries' mobile phones instead of physically delivering the items.

Under the 'Lisha familia' initiative, a small number of targeted households in Kanyoni village and Nanyuki Ward received the vouchers during a test-run. The system will be rolled out to the rest of the county after a successful test, with vouchers redeemable at designated collection points.

According to Governor Ndiritu Muriithi, the system aims to ensure residents observe social distancing guidelines issued by the government. The county is using data collected during the Universal Health Care (UHC) registration to identify and verify beneficiaries. National government administration officers and Nyumba Kumi members are also involved in confirming and updating the data.

Volunteers from the communities have been involved in cleaning up and processing the data to ensure only those deserving receive the food aid. The county intends to raise more than Sh130 million to feed affected families.
