Published on April 20, 2020, a little over a month into the COVID-19 pandemic, several Kenyan businesses were already feeling the pinch. However, amidst the challenges, some sectors have emerged as winners, with increased demand and opportunities for growth.

One of the sectors that have seen a significant increase in demand is courier and delivery services. With people staying at home, the need for reliable delivery services has skyrocketed, making companies like SafeBoda and Sendy more prominent than ever.

1. E-Commerce Websites

As more people turn to online shopping, e-commerce websites like Jumia and Kilimall have experienced a surge in demand, with delivery services playing a crucial role in meeting this demand.

2. Mobile Money

The COVID-19 pandemic has also led to an increase in mobile money transactions, with the Kenya Central Bank lifting the ceiling on mobile money balances and daily limits. This has made it easier for people to transfer money, with PesaLink and Safaricom's M-Pesa waiving fees on respective transfer limits.

3. E-Learning Platforms

With schools closed due to the pandemic, e-learning platforms have become a lifeline for parents looking for ways to educate their children from home. Companies like Longhorn Publishers, Eneza Education, and ViuSasa have waived fees for their services, making it easier for parents to access educational materials.

As the pandemic continues to affect Kenyan businesses, it is clear that some sectors are better equipped to handle the challenges than others. By identifying these winners and losers, businesses can adapt and innovate, emerging stronger and more resilient in the long run.
