As the long rains season approaches, the Kenyan government has issued a warning of impending flash floods, urging residents in flood-prone areas to move to higher grounds.
According to Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter, the Eastern Hydros, specifically the seven forks dam, are full to capacity and already spilling due to the ongoing heavy rains.
Speaking during a joint media briefing with Interior CS Fred Matiang'i, Environment CS Keriako Tobiko, and Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa, Keter warned residents in Garissa to move to higher ground as the dams are full and more rainfall is expected in Kitui and Meru areas.
Interior CS Matiang'i directed County and Regional Commissioners to work with the National Government Administration Officers infrastructure to ensure populations in mudslide-prone areas in Murang'a, Taita Taveta, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Garissa, Tana River, and Kitui are moved to safe places.
Devolution CS Wamalwa stated that the Government has already responded to the situation, sending food and non-food items to support those affected in Elgeyo Marakwet, and urged County Governments to set aside emergency funds, citing climate change as a major contributor to the recurring disasters.
Environment CS Tobiko called on Kenyans to take advantage of the rains to plant more trees, which can help avert damage caused by the floods.
