The Kenyan government has taken significant steps to combat the novel coronavirus, including the establishment of the Covid-19 Emergency Response Fund. The fund has received substantial donations from companies and individuals, with the Central Bank of Kenya contributing Sh7.4 billion.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has also directed that Sh2 billion recovered from corruption proceeds be channeled towards fighting the virus. The Senate has donated Sh200 million to support the cause, and the national government has boosted counties' collections by Sh5 billion, providing Sh8.5 billion to reduce the suffering of the most vulnerable.

Additionally, Sh500 million has been set aside to assist those with severe disabilities, with a stipend of Sh2,500 monthly to be provided until the situation clears. However, concerns have been raised about the distribution of relief food, with allegations of diversion by some individuals entrusted with its distribution.

A centralized command point for the distribution of food and other supplies can ensure fair play and accountability. It is essential that only the truly disabled receive the stipends, and officers in charge of the exercise must account for every single cent spent to prevent the creation of millionaires while the needy go hungry.
