On April 20, 2020, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) halted Mumias Sugar Company's ethanol sales after the company failed to pay a KSh100 million tax bond.
The company had requested to raise KSh10 million, but KRA rejected the proposal.
Mumias Sugar Acting Human Resource Manager, John Shiundu, appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya to intervene in the issue, saying the company had written to the government for a remission on taxes but had yet to receive a response.
Despite the halt, Mumias Sugar Company Limited had revived ethanol production in January 2020 after Kenya Power agreed to reconnect power to the miller's premises.
As of the time of the halt, the company had produced 340,000 liters of ethanol, which it sold locally to different firms.
