On April 18, 2020, the Mexican Football League made a significant decision to suspend promotion and relegation for its top two divisions for five years due to the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

League President Enrique Bonilla, who had recently recovered from COVID-19, explained that clubs had been struggling financially even before the pandemic, citing a decline in income from sponsorship and TV rights in recent seasons.

As a result, the second division season, which was halted in mid-March, has been officially ended without a champion. The first division championship, which was also halted, is still awaiting guidelines from the Ministry of Health.
