On April 18, 2020, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Lower Eastern Branch called off a looming strike that was set to begin the following week.

The decision came after the union was informed that medical practitioners in the affected counties had received their pending pay and were issued with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

According to a statement issued by Dr. Okumu Charles, the union's secretary, the health workers were advised to continue serving the country, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Okumu stated that the union had engaged with the employer and unpaid salaries were immediately settled. He also revealed that all PPEs had been delivered and were being distributed to the counties.

Dr. Okumu further emphasized the importance of protecting themselves with PPEs and encouraged the doctors to continue offering services to the public.
