As the government imposes a nationwide curfew to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, private security firms have stepped up to offer their assistance. With over 700,000 members, the Private Security Congress has organized its members into groups to undertake various tasks, including sanitizing and using protective gear without endangering their own lives.
According to the Private Security Regulatory Authority, private security has been listed as an essential service, and guards are required to follow identification guidelines during the curfew. Over 600 officers are undergoing training to cascade the information down to other members.
"Our guards will act as primary informants, and we immediately transmit the same information to the national emergency centre," said Delano Kiilu, Secretary General of the Protective and Safety Association of Kenya.
"The teams are already working, and we are in constant consultation with relevant offices," added Cosmas Mutava, Chairman of the Protective Security Industry Association.
The communication and command centre will coordinate private security companies while liaising with the national centre.
