On March 18, 2020, Narok County Senator Ledama Olekina proposed that the government suspend rent payments for three months to help Kenyans cope with the economic impact of the Coronavirus outbreak.
According to Ledama, the suspension would enable Kenyans to stay at home and focus on fighting the virus without worrying about paying rent.
“By extension, I request landlords to suspend rent payments for 3 months! This will help Kenyans stay at home and allow the world to fight the virus without worrying about a roof over their head,” Ledama opined.
He also asked the government to order financial institutions to suspend mortgages and car loans repayment for three months to alleviate some of the economic pressures faced by Kenyans during this time.
“@StateHouseKenya, we appreciate the presidential directive on cashless transactions. To cushion Kenyan citizens who are taking a hit economically, please request financial institutions to consider suspending Mortgage and Chattels (car loans) repayment for 3 months,” Ledama added.
Furthermore, Ledama suggested that the Ministry of Health and the government consider appointing a medical expert as the spokesperson on public health, rather than Health CS Mutahi Kagwe, who has no medical background.
