On a night of high drama, Chelsea made it a torrid few days for Liverpool, defeating them 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday.
Chelsea's win marked the end of Liverpool's 44-match unbeaten streak in the Premier League, which had been shattered just two days earlier with a 3-0 defeat at Watford.
Chelsea's Willian opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a powerful shot that bounced off Liverpool keeper Adrian and into the net.
Former Everton midfielder Ross Barkley sealed the win for Chelsea just past the hour mark, driving home the second goal after a surging run.
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard praised his team's effort, saying, "They are the best team in the land, this year what they are doing in the league is incredible."
He added, "So for us to put in the effort, focus, determination and quality was something special tonight. It's a one-off I know, but you have to celebrate these moments."
Despite making seven changes, Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp's team struggled to respond to the shock of their defeat at Watford, and they faded in the second half.
Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga made a remarkable triple save before halftime, blocking attempts by Sadio Mane, Divock Origi, and Curtis Jones.
For Liverpool, a season of dominance has suddenly hit the buffers, with three losses in four games in all competitions.
"We deserved to lose because they scored twice and we made massive mistakes for both goals," Klopp said.
"Nobody has to feel sorry for us, we will win football games and that is what we want to do on Saturday," he added.
