On February 25, 2020, Narok Senator Ledama Olekina was arrested in Nairobi over hate speech allegations following a recent Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) rally in Narok.
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) confirmed the arrest, stating that Olekina was apprehended over hate speech and incitement to violence.
According to the NCIC, Olekina made inciting remarks during the BBI rally in Narok on Saturday and again on a live recording of the JKL show on Citizen TV on Wednesday.
During the JKL show, Olekina stated, "On matters of food security, what will our people eat if you take our land? They must remain as agricultural land, use legitimate process if you want to subdivide them."
He also said, "So long as I live, I will pursue justice for these people who I represent."
As a result of his statements, Olekina has been taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters on Kiambu Road for interrogation.
