On January 15, 2020, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced that Federico Valverde, a 21-year-old Uruguayan midfielder for Real Madrid, would serve a one-match suspension for his role in a late foul during the Spanish Super Cup final.

The incident occurred in the closing stages of extra time when Valverde chopped down Spain striker Alvaro Morata as he charged through on goal. The match ultimately ended in a 4-1 penalty shootout victory for Real Madrid over local rivals Atletico Madrid.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone described the foul as the 'most important moment of the match.' As a result of the suspension, Valverde will miss Real Madrid's home match against Sevilla on Saturday.
