As the new season of the Kenya Volleyball Federation gets underway next month, Clubs Secretary General Kasujaa Onyonyi has sounded the alarm over the declining competitiveness of the local game.
Onyonyi, who was elected in absentia on Saturday during the clubs and team managers' election, takes over from Neddy Kilimo of the Directorate of Criminal Investigation who was elected vice chairperson.
Onyonyi, who also doubles up as the Kenya Pipeline's team manager, expressed his concerns over the low number of teams participating in the league, citing the withdrawal of Kenya Army from the competition, leaving only seven clubs to challenge for the title.
"Last year there were eight clubs in the league but during the draws on Saturday, Kenya Army pulled out, leaving only seven clubs to challenge for the title," Onyonyi bemoaned.
He added that the low number of teams might make the competition less exciting for fans and that playing home and away matches might even make matters worse for self-sponsored teams.
Onyonyi welcomed the inclusion of new clubs Rift Valley Prisons and Kenya Forest Service (KSF) formerly Kenya Forest Rangers who are making a comeback to the league.
