Published on January 15, 2020, the National Government has constructed 822 water pans for farmers in Laikipia County at a cost of Sh. 160 million.
The water pans are intended to help farmers boost their farming activities, which will earn them higher returns in the semi-arid area.
However, the County Implementation Development Implementation Committee (CDICC) has urged the beneficiaries to fence the facilities to prevent accidents.
“Unfenced water pans and dams are a risk to children and livestock,” Laikipia County Director of Presidential Delivery Unit, Richard Tutah, said.
The Committee noted that fencing the area before excavation will ensure the safety of humans and livestock.
They also emphasized the importance of constructing the pans according to specification to prevent soil erosion and render the facility unbeneficial to the farmer.
Laikipia County NIB Officer, Joseph Muchina, announced that in the second phase, the government will construct 200 more water pans in the area at a cost of Sh. 150,000 per unit.
Umande Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA), Joseph Mugweru, appreciated the efforts of the National Government, stating that the pans have uplifted the living standards of the beneficiaries.
