Published on January 15, 2020, Kirinyaga County residents have been celebrating the ouster of Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri, who they claim failed to address the locust menace and enhance the agricultural sector.
Deputy Governor Peter Ndambiri led the residents in glorifying President Kenyatta's decision, saying it could not have come at a better time. Ndambiri was speaking during a visit to Riandira village, where locusts were reportedly sighted.
According to Ndambiri, Kiunjuri's tenure was marred by politics, with the CS prioritizing his own ambitions over the needs of the agricultural sector. 'We have been experiencing problems with people running around seeking leadership positions for 2022 instead of working as required, we need somebody who can help us on matters of agriculture,' Ndambiri said.
Ndambiri also criticized Kiunjuri for not being on the ground with farmers, pioneering solutions for the locust menace that has affected several counties. However, he expressed optimism that the incoming CS, Peter Munya, would be more effective in enhancing the agricultural sector, given its importance to the Kenyan economy.
