On January 14, 2020, Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior took to Twitter to express his thoughts on the sudden removal of former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri from the cabinet.
Senator Kilonzo Junior's tweet was a stern warning to government officials to remain humble in their positions, as they never know when their fortunes will change.
“There is something disconcerting about appointments – you wake up a CS, bulldoze other road users in a high-end Four-wheel drive and by end of day, you are in traffic jam with the same road users. Let’s learn to be modest while in office,” he tweeted.
President Uhuru Kenyatta had earlier announced the reshuffle of his cabinet, with Mwangi Kiunjuri being the only Cabinet Secretary fired on Tuesday. Kiunjuri later issued a statement saying he was not surprised by the decision.
Reactions to Senator Kilonzo Junior's post were mixed, with some people praising his honesty and others criticizing him for being insensitive.
As one Twitter user pointed out, being modest is not unique to appointees, but also applies to those in elective politics.
Another user reminded Senator Kilonzo Junior that the Bible says the first will be last and the last will be first, implying that one should please their master, in this case, the people.
However, not everyone agreed with Senator Kilonzo Junior's sentiments, with one user accusing him of being hypocritical and not practicing what he preaches.
