On Tuesday, January 14, 2020, the security of Kenyan teachers in the north eastern region was a major concern following a staged attack by suspected Al Shabaab fighters on Sunday morning in Garissa.
Professor George Magoha, the Education Cabinet Secretary, confirmed that the government would take necessary measures to ensure the safety of all Kenyans, including teachers.
"As Kenyans, we must not be afraid, because it is only God who knows when I will die; so let those teachers remain where they are because the government is very aware," Professor Magoha said.
He added that it was painful to lose a teacher who had sacrificed to serve in a hardship area, and that justice must be done.
On Monday, January 13, 2020, Wilson Sossion, the Secretary General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers, urged Professor Magoha to arrange a meeting with the union, the Ministry of Interior, and the Teachers Service Commission to discuss the dire state of teachers in the north eastern region.
Professor Magoha promised to take adamant action against the culprits behind the attack, stating that security agencies were trailing them down.
"You cannot use, and shall not use religion to kill innocent people, and that is may stand. I pray that God may grant their souls a good place in heaven," Professor Magoha said.
