On January 15, 2020, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i celebrated the 10th anniversary of the arrival of the Fiber Optic undersea cable in Kenya at a multipurpose amphitheater in Mombasa.

Speaking at the event, Matiang'i commended the Mombasa youth for utilizing their time and talent well at the newly built facility. He emphasized the importance of nurturing the youth and engaging them in constructive activities rather than idleness, drug abuse, and crime.

"As a Minister for security, this is more important to me than chasing young people around Mombasa town with the police looking for young armed criminals," Matiang'i said.

He noted that it is the responsibility of the government to support the youth, following in the footsteps of President Uhuru Kenyatta, who has made it his focus to support young people. Matiang'i made a personal commitment to support 20 talents for girls and boys from Mombasa and to fundraise to support their activities.

ICT CS, Joe Mucheru, also spoke at the event, commending Seacom for availing internet services to the residents of the coastal city. He noted that the digital network would transform many lives and enable the youth to earn a living by working online.
