On Monday, January 13, 2020, Kenya Railways (KR) announced an extra train to alleviate the burden on commuters along the Nairobi CBD-Mwiki route, following a matatu strike that entered its second day.
The strike, which began on January 13, 2020, was sparked by matatu operators protesting the poor state of roads in the area, particularly the Kasarani-Mwiki Road.
As a result, commuters were left stranded at the Nairobi Central Railway station, prompting KR to take action.
According to KR Managing Director Philip Mainga, the Corporation will continue to run the extra morning trip along this route until the strike is over.
The extra train will cater to the stranded commuters, who have been forced to walk long distances to reach their destinations.
KR operates a daily round trip on the route, with stopovers at Githurai, Mwiki, Kahawa West, and Ruiru.
The morning train departs Ruiru station at 6:10 am and arrives in town at 7:40 am, while the evening train leaves the Nairobi Central station at 5:40 pm to arrive at 7:13 pm.
The train stops at various stations, including Makongeni, Makadara, Mtindwa, Kariobangi South, Dandora, Maili Saba, Mwiki, Manguo, Githurai, Kahawa West, Kenyatta University, Clayworks, and Kitambaa.
