On December 28, 2019, a horrific incident occurred in Nakuru County when Phanis Nyabaro and her 17-year-old sister were allegedly set on fire by Constable Saka Achimba, who is attached to the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit in Rongai Sub County.
The victims, who sustained severe burns, are still in critical condition. Achimba, who has been accused of attempting to murder the two sisters, appeared before Nakuru Principal Magistrate Bernard Mararo on Tuesday and applied for bail.
Despite the victims' lawyer, Ms Moenga Moraa, opposing the application, citing concerns that Achimba may interfere with the victims if released on bond, Magistrate Mararo agreed that the offence was bailable and released Achimba on a surety bond of Sh200,000 with an alternative cash bail of Sh100,000.
The case will be mentioned on February 17.
